This is still the single most common question we get on the showroom floor: Vista or Cruz? The models have changed — both are now on their third generation — but the decision underneath hasn't. Here's how we walk families through it in person, and how you can think it through before you come in.
Start with three questions
Before we ever push a stroller across the floor, we ask:
- How many kids will this stroller eventually carry? Not today — over the next four or five years.
- Where will it actually live and roll? A Back Bay brownstone with a narrow entry and four steps is a different problem than a garage in Hingham and a gravel driveway.
- Who is lifting it, and into what? A hatchback, a small sedan trunk, a third-floor walk-up, or the back of an SUV.
Nine times out of ten, the answers point clearly to one of these two.
The UPPAbaby Vista V3: the one that grows
The Vista V3 is our most-recommended full-size stroller for families who think a second child is likely, who share a nanny, or who simply want the option to expand later without buying a second stroller.
What makes it work:
- It converts to a double in-line, not side-by-side. That means it still fits through a standard doorway, a shop entrance, and the aisle of a T station elevator. Side-by-side doubles do not, reliably, in Boston.
- Big wheels and real suspension. Cobblestones on Beacon Hill, brick sidewalks in the South End, and February slush are the exact conditions we bought this stroller to handle.
- A genuinely large basket. If you walk to the grocery store rather than drive, this matters more than any spec sheet suggests.
- It accepts a second seat and a bassinet. The RumbleSeat V3 and the Bassinet V3 are the two add-ons families ask about most. Configurations and what's included in the box change by model year — ask us and we'll show you exactly what comes with the one on our floor.
The trade-off is honest: it's the bigger, heavier of the two. If you're lifting it into a small trunk every single day, feel that lift before you commit. We'll let you do it in the store.
The UPPAbaby Cruz V3: the one that fits
The Cruz V3 is the right answer more often than people expect. It's a full-size, everyday stroller — not a travel stroller — but it's narrower and lighter than the Vista, with a smaller folded footprint.
Choose the Cruz if:
- You're confident about one child, or a large age gap means you won't need a double.
- You live in a walk-up, a unit with a tight entry hall, or a building with a small elevator.
- Your car's trunk is the real constraint.
- You want full-size comfort and basket space without full-size bulk.
It still rides well on brick and rough sidewalk — just with a bit less cushion than the Vista. The fold is the same intuitive one-piece motion, which matters more than you'd think when you're doing it one-handed with a baby on your hip.
What we've learned from twenty years of this
Two patterns come up again and again:
People over-buy for a hypothetical second child. If a second kid is three or more years away, you may be better served buying the stroller that fits your life now. Plenty of families buy a Cruz and add a lightweight second stroller later for less than the difference.
People under-weight the daily lift. The stroller you resent hauling up the stairs is the stroller that stays in the hallway. Weight and fold size are not minor specs — they're the thing that determines whether you use it.
Neither of these is something a spec chart can tell you. It's why we still think this decision should be made with your hands on the handlebar.
