We get this question by phone most weeks, usually from somewhere between Salem and Newburyport: is it really worth driving into the city for baby gear?
It's a fair question. You're pregnant, or you have a newborn, and Boston traffic is not most people's idea of a fun Saturday. So here's an honest answer from two people who have been doing this for a while — Ana and Nenad, owners of Tadpole since 2018, in a store that has been serving Boston families for 20 years.
The short version
If you already know exactly what you want and you just need it in a box, no — order it. Any good shop will ship it to you, us included.
The trip is worth it when you're making a decision you can't make from photographs. Which stroller folds small enough for your trunk and still fits an infant seat. Whether the convertible car seat you like actually clears the front seats of your specific car. Whether the crib you've been staring at online reads warm or cold in real light. Those are thirty-second questions in a showroom and thirty-minute rabbit holes online.
What you can actually do here
Our South End showroom at 58 Clarendon St is set up for testing, not just browsing. You can push strollers on a real floor, fold and unfold them yourself, lift them to feel the weight, click infant seats in and out of bases, and put your own hands on the fabric and the finishes. We keep a running list of the strollers and car seats available for testing in store, so you can check before you drive.
We carry Nuna, Cybex, UPPAbaby, Bugaboo, Stokke, Silver Cross, Doona, Clek, Veer and Thule for wheels and seats, plus Oeuf and Monte Design on the nursery side. Having them under one roof is the whole point: cross-shopping brands in one afternoon is something no amount of tab-switching replicates.
Two other things worth knowing before you plan the drive:
- Certified car seat installation is free with purchase. Not a video, not a diagram — someone puts it in your car with you and shows you how to do it yourself next time. For a first baby, this is the single most useful hour you'll spend.
- You can book the visit instead of gambling on it. A baby gear appointment means someone is expecting you and has time set aside. That matters more when you've driven forty minutes than when you live around the corner. Here's what the showroom experience actually looks like.
Getting here from the North Shore
Driving: from Marblehead, Swampscott, Salem, Beverly, Peabody or Danvers, it's Route 1A or 128 to Route 1 or I-93 and into the city. Off-peak on a weekday morning — we open at 10am, Tuesday through Saturday — is dramatically easier than a Saturday afternoon. If you're coming from Gloucester, Rockport, Ipswich or Newburyport, the same rule applies, just add time.
By train: the Newburyport/Rockport commuter rail runs into North Station. From there, take the Orange Line south to Back Bay, and we're about a five-minute walk. If you're testing strollers rather than carrying one home, the train is genuinely pleasant, and we ship purchases so you don't have to wrestle a box onto the platform.
Parking: the South End has metered street parking and several garages within a few blocks. Give yourself a ten-minute buffer and it's a non-issue.
If you'd rather not drive at all
You don't have to. We do at-home appointments, which is the option North Shore families choose most often when the nursery itself is the problem to solve — someone comes to you, measures the actual room, and works out what fits. We also run concierge appointments at our Hingham showroom, though that's a longer haul from the North Shore than coming into Boston.
And we ship. Across New England and up and down the East Coast. Plenty of families do a single visit to make the big decisions, then order the rest from home over the following months as the due date gets closer.
The part people don't expect
What surprises most first-time parents isn't the products. It's how much of the visit is us talking you out of things. A registry that's two-thirds essentials and one-third things you'll never open is the normal outcome of shopping online. After twenty years, we have a pretty good sense of what gets used and what gets resold at nine months old, and we'd rather tell you that than sell you a second stroller.
That's the actual reason to make the trip. Not the inventory — the conversation.
Boston magazine named us Best of Boston 2025 for Best Baby Registry, which was lovely, but the review we care about is the one where somebody drove in from Beverly, left with a plan, and came back two years later for the second baby.
