Twenty years in the South End has taught us that the hardest part of getting ready for a baby isn't buying the gear — it's knowing what you actually need versus what the internet insists you can't live without. First-time parents come into Tadpole with a spreadsheet of 80 items and leave with a plan built around maybe 25. So here's the honest version: the gear that matters, in the order it matters, from people who've helped thousands of families do exactly this.
Start with the big three
If you get these right, everything else is comparatively easy. They're also the purchases where in-person guidance pays for itself, because the right answer depends on your car, your body, and where you live.
1. A car seat. This is the one thing you legally cannot leave the hospital without, so it's where we tell every parent to start. An infant car seat (the kind that clicks in and out of a base) is the usual first pick. What matters isn't the brand on the box — it's whether the seat fits your car and gets installed correctly, and most car seats are installed wrong. 2. A stroller. The question isn't "which stroller is best" — it's "which stroller is best for your life." A family in a Back Bay walk-up navigating the T has different needs than one driving in from the South Shore. Do you want one stroller that converts from single to double as your family grows, or a light travel stroller you can fold one-handed? 3. A safe place to sleep. A bassinet for the early months (bonus if it's small enough to fit beside your bed) or a crib you'll grow into. Add a firm, flat mattress and a few fitted sheets. Skip the pillows, bumpers, and blankets for the newborn stage — bare is safest.
The everyday essentials
Once the big three are handled, this is the short list that actually earns its place in your home:
- Feeding gear: if you're bottle-feeding or pumping, a few bottles and a way to clean them; if you're nursing, a comfortable spot and a nursing pillow. You can add to this once you know what your baby prefers.
- Diapering: a changing surface, diapers in newborn and size 1, wipes, and a plan for where the dirty ones go.
- A way to carry your baby: a soft carrier or wrap frees up your hands and, for many parents, saves the witching hour.
- Clothing basics: a stack of onesies, sleepers, and swaddles. Don't over-buy newborn size — babies grow out of it fast, and yours may skip it entirely.
- A few soothing items: a white-noise source, a couple of pacifiers if you choose to use them, and a swaddle or sleep sack.
What you can wait on
High chairs, playmats, activity centers, most toys, and the second stroller can all wait until your baby is actually here and you know what your days look like. It's far easier to add the right thing later than to return the wrong thing now.
