The Best Stroller for Boston Winters, Brownstones & the T

By Ana & Nenad  •  0 comments  •   4 minute read

Strollers get reviewed in a vacuum: on smooth sidewalks, in mild weather, by someone who lives on the ground floor. Boston is not that place. Here you're carrying a stroller up a brownstone stoop, steering around a snowbank in January, folding it one-handed on the T platform, and then finding room for it in a trunk that is already full.

We're Ana and Nenad. We've owned Tadpole since 2018, in a store that has been helping Boston families for 20 years, and "which stroller works for the way I actually live?" is the question we hear most. Here's how we think through it.

Start with the stairs, not the stroller

Before you compare a single feature, picture your front door. Is it a stoop? A third-floor walk-up? An elevator building? A garage and a driveway? If you carry the stroller up steps every day, weight and fold size matter more than almost anything else, and a stroller that rolls beautifully but is awkward to lift will become the one you resent by month three.

This is the main reason we ask parents to lift strollers at the showroom. The number on a spec sheet means little until it's in your arms at chest height, with a diaper bag on your shoulder.

The winter test: wheels, brakes and bundling

Boston winters ask three things of a stroller. The wheels need to handle uneven, slushy, sometimes icy pavement. The brake and handlebar need to work with gloves on. And the seat has to accommodate a bundled baby, whether that means a bassinet or lay-flat position for a newborn or a seat roomy enough for a snowsuit.

Larger, air-tracked or all-terrain style wheels generally cope better with rough winter sidewalks, while compact travel strollers shine in mild weather and on transit. Few families need one stroller for everything, which is why many end up with a main stroller and a lighter second one. Our 2026 showroom stroller roundup goes deeper on the main-stroller choice.

Strollers worth trying for city life

These are strollers we carry that tend to come up for city families. Come try them side by side rather than choosing from photos.

  • Bugaboo Dragonfly and Fox 5 Renew — two very different answers to the city question. The Dragonfly is built around compact, easy daily use; the Fox is a more all-terrain feeling stroller with a bassinet-to-seat setup. See Bugaboo.
  • Cybex Balios S Lux — a streamlined everyday stroller for walking errands. See Cybex at Tadpole.
  • UPPAbaby Cruz V3 and Vista V3 — the Cruz as a full-featured single, the Vista when you're planning for a second child. See UPPAbaby at Tadpole.
  • Nuna Mixx Next and Triv Next — popular everyday systems that pair easily with Nuna infant seats. See Nuna at Tadpole.
  • Bugaboo Butterfly 2 Plus, Cybex Libelle and Coya — compact travel strollers that fold small, handy as a second stroller for transit, taxis and trips.

Not every model is out on the floor at all times, so tell us what you're curious about when you book and we'll set the showroom up for you. The list of strollers and car seats available to test is the best place to check ahead.

Folding, trunks and the T

Fold the stroller yourself, with one hand, while pretending to hold a baby. Then ask: does it stand on its own when folded? Does it fit in the trunk of your car, alongside everything else? Can you carry it down a flight of stairs without it unfolding? These are the moments you'll live with, and they're easy to check in person and nearly impossible to judge online.

If you take public transit regularly, give extra weight to a quick, compact fold. If you drive most days, trunk fit matters more. Most Boston families do a bit of both.

Don't forget the car seat

If you're choosing an infant car seat, check that it clicks into your stroller, and that it installs well in your car. Every car seat purchase at Tadpole includes free certified installation, so you leave knowing it's done right. For first-time parents, that's often the most reassuring part of the process.

Try before you commit

The best Boston stroller is the one that fits your stairs, your car and your habits, and that's different for a South End walk-up than for a house in Quincy. A baby gear appointment lets you push, fold and lift the contenders with us beside you, in our South End showroom, through our Hingham concierge, or at home. Read what to expect in What Actually Happens at a Baby Gear Appointment.

We're at 58 Clarendon St, Boston, MA 02116, open Tuesday through Saturday, 10am–6pm. See how to visit us, or browse strollers online. We ship across New England and the East Coast, too.
